L Narayana Reddy, Karnataka’s pioneer in organic farming, passed away at Marenahalli farm near Doddaballapur, on January 14, 2019. He was 84.

He saw the lopsided agricultural policy that made farming unsustainable. In 1970, he started with chemical farming in Varthur village on the outskirts of Bengaluru, but gave it up.

Reddy was known as Karnataka’s Masanobu Fukuoka, after the pioneer organic farmer from Japan. In fact, Fukuoka visited his farm in Doddaballapur in 1988. Influenced by the latter’s book on farming, he adopted organic methods to cultivate the land.

“Organic farming is not just about cultivation practices, but it is about a life in harmony with nature,” he stated.

Following the rapid urbanisation of Varthur, he purchased land at Marenahalli, near Doddaballapur, and built his farm there.

He was known for his experiments in scientific approach to farming. Several foreign universities sent their students to visit this farm.

He was a recipient the Nadoja award and an honorary doctorate degree from the Kannada University at Hampi.
