The first recognition of prior learning (RPL) was conducted by Assocom India and the Tamilnadu Bakers’ Federation of India at the India Bake Show, which concluded at the Chennai Expo Centre recently.
Assocom India, under partnership with the National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC) of India under Prime Minister Kaushal Vikas Yojna 2 (PMKVY 2), will provide nationally-recognised certification based on the experience, knowledge and skills of bakery workers.
As the RPL is a nationwide initiative, other cities will follow suit. PMKVY is the flagship scheme of the government of India’s ministry of skill development and entrepreneurship (MSDE).
The programme aims to impart skills training for existing workers to align the competencies of the unregulated workforce to the National Skills Qualifications Framework (NSQF) under the PMKVY 2 RPL scheme.
The RPL will focus on enhancing the career/employability opportunities of an individual as well as provide alternative routes to higher education.
It also envisages to provide opportunities to reduce inequalities based on privileging certain forms of knowledge over others.
It is a process of assessment of an individual’s prior learning to give due importance to learning as an outcome rather than learning as a process.
The RPL qualification may help bakers change careers, gain a promotion, ensure job security and comply with industry standards and licensing requirements.
