Dr Shalini Arya has been elected as the new president of the Association of Food Scientists and Technologists India (AFSTI) – Mumbai Region with a decisive majority. The results of the January 2025 elections were announced in February. AFSTI Mumbai aims to strengthen industry-academia collaborations and expand outreach initiatives under its new leadership.

Ritesh Mathur and Rishikesh Deshpande have been elected as vice presidents. Mathur, a seasoned food industry consultant, brings expertise in food safety, regulatory affairs, and business development. Deshpande, known for his contributions to food product innovation and technology-driven advancements, focuses on bridging research with practical industry applications. Together, they aim to drive AFSTI Mumbai’s growth by fostering innovation and strengthening industry partnerships.

Dr Roji Waghmare, specialising in food chemistry, quality control, and waste management, takes on the role of secretary. Bhushan Yengade, a globally recognised food industry leader and founder of Binder Technology Consultancy, assumes the position of joint secretary.

Yengade is a renowned food technologist with experience in both the private and public sectors. His firm, Binder Technology Consultancy, has played a pivotal role in advancing food industry projects, while also expanding into the petrochemicals and gas sector. This marks the first time the Mumbai chapter has seen an international personality in a leadership role, as Yengade is a former official of the Ministry of Food Processing Industries for Maharashtra state.

Professor Yogesh Gut, an expert in functional foods, nutraceuticals, and extrusion processing, has been appointed as treasurer. His experience in new product development and cereal technology has contributed to advancements in food innovation. As treasurer, he aims to support AFSTI’s financial strategies and key initiatives.

With a clear sense of purpose, during the presidential address Dr Arya outlined her vision for carrying out food technology activities with even greater determination and impact. She expressed her commitment to strengthening initiatives, ensuring they reach a wider audience and achieve their full potential in promoting education, safety, and nutrition in the food sector. She also outlined several proposed activities for the upcoming term, aimed at further enhancing the chapter's engagement with students and the industry.
