The apex food regulator has asked food safety departments of all states to employ the services of mobile labs to check adulteration in ingredients used to make sweets particularly ‘khoya’, as the festive season is approaching.
In a letter written to the state Food Safety Commissioners, the Food Safety & Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has urged the state authorities to position mobile food testing labs in a random manner at all prominent ‘Khoya’ markets in their states.
The letter reads, “It is advised to carry out the exercise of positioning Food Safety on Wheels (mobile food testing lab) where available, on fortnightly or monthly basis in a random manner in all the prominent Khoya Mandis in your state or on the basis of specific intelligence input, especially in view of the ensuing festive season.”
The decision was taken after a pilot project done by the FSSAI in Delhi wherein a mobile food lab was placed in prominent Khoya Mandis of Delhi.
“A very positive feedback was received and accordingly it was decided to replicate the exercise across the country to boost consumer confidence,” said an official with the FSSAI.
The official added that FSSAI received representation from sweets manufacturers requesting to check adulteration of khoya and only adulteration-free khoya and other similar loose products like paneer, milk and chap should be allowed for sale.
Meanwhile, the FSSAI has also sought an action taken report from the state food safety departments in this regard, time to time, preferably by the end of every month.
