A team of officials from the ministry of food processing industries (MoFPI), led by special secretary J P Meena, is currently on a visit to the United States to attract potential investors. Since the announcement of foreign direct investment (FDI) in food retail, officials from the ministry have visited the United Kingdom, France and Japan.

In the United States, the team will meet food service and logistic firms and invite them to participate in World Food India, which is organised by the ministry and slated to take place in New Delhi between November 3 and 5, 2017, and invest in Indian food processing and food retail companies.

They will also discuss possible investments in cold chain infrastructure, backward integration, forward linkages, etc. It is pertinent to note that the government of India introduced reforms like permitting 100 per cent FDI in food retail. However, the proposal to permit the sale of non-food items alongside that of food items is being considered by it.

A proposal regarding the same has been sent to the cabinet. It has also been learnt that the cabinet is actively considering it, and various departments are currently discussing what part of the retail the non-food items should constitute.
