JBS appoints Almanza as global head, food safety and quality assurance

As a part of JBS’ effort to serve as the worldwide leader in high-quality, innovative protein and value-added food products, it has appointed Alfred Almanza - fondly known as Al - to the role of global head, food safety and quality assurance.

He will join the company’s global leadership team and report directly to Gilberto Tomazoni, its global president of operations.

Based in Greeley, Colorado, Almanza will lead JBS’ global food safety efforts, ensuring that its operations around the world implement the highest food safety, quality control and risk management systems, while maintaining and expanding access to global export markets.

The company is the worldwide leader in protein exports, serving over 3,00,000 customers in over 150 nations.

“We are delighted to bring Almanza’s expertise and passion for food safety, quality and public health to the JBS team,” Tomazoni said.

“During his long and storied career at the United States Department of Agriculture, Food Safety and Inspection Service (USDA, FSIS), which lasted nearly 40 years, he earned the respect and admiration of his peers for his team-based management approach and his willingness to partner with both industry and public health organisations to ensure the provision of safe, quality food to consumers,” he added.

“JBS is privileged to have someone of Almanza’s calibre join the company,” Tomazoni stated.

Almanza is globally recognised as an expert on food safety, risk management, the development of modern inspection systems and the international sanitary standards that govern market access to meat and poultry products.

During his time at FSIS, he held several leadership positions, including labour management specialist, district manager of the agency’s Dallas District Office and ultimately administrator, where he led a team of over 7,000 FSIS field employees.

“I am excited to start this new chapter of my career as a part of the JBS global team,” Almanza said.

“It was an honour to serve the public as a member of the USDA team and help uphold its mission to protect public health for nearly four decades,” he added.

“I now join a team that shares my commitment to food safety and feeding the world in a safe, sustainable way,” Almanza said.

“I look forward to helping JBS maintain the highest food safety levels in the industry, and putting in place best-in-class benchmarks and safeguards to ensure that our products continue to exceed all industry standards,” he added.

Almanza began his career with USDA as a food safety inspector in a small plant in Dalhart, Texas.

He eventually rose from this entry-level position to serve as deputy under secretary for food safety under Thomas J Vilsack, secretary of agriculture, between September 2014 and December 2016.

For the past ten years, Almanza has served as the administrator of FSIS, leading USDA’s science-based food safety modernisation efforts, regulatory strategies and public health efforts to prevent food-borne illnesses.
