Onions at Rs 29.90 per kg; bigbasket’s online offer valid till Oct 18

Onions, currently priced at an-all-time high of Rs 70-80 per kg pan-India, are being offered by e-tail giant bigbasket at the unprecedented rate of Rs 29.90 per kg for a period of four days, ending October 18, 2019. bigbasketeers can avail the offer only via the online supermarket’s website or app.
The surge in onion prices is the highest in the past four years. They have increased by almost Rs 25 per kg in the past six months, as per data provided by the price monitoring cell of the Government of India’s Consumer Affairs Department.
Apart from offering the produce at a lower price to its customers, bigbasket also aims to support the crisis-hit farmers, who are the company’s main suppliers for fruits and vegetables.
Speaking about this, Varun Vijayaraghavan, marketing manager, bigbasket, said, “We have always placed great emphasis on all our stakeholders. We make huge ongoing efforts in bringing value to both our customers as well as farmers, by procuring our fresh produce directly from source.”
“This, we see, has two benefits - customers get the best produce and farmers get the best price. We are hoping that this new offer will benefit the entire value chain,” he added.
Through its Farmer Connect programme, bigbasket is helping increase the income of farmers by about 10 to 15 per cent, while at the same time bringing the freshest produce to its customers.
The company has set up several collection centres (CC) across the country, and is now sourcing 60 per cent of its fruits and vegetables directly from the farmers, thus eliminating the middlemen in the procurement process. It is worth noting that fruits and vegetables are a key category and a regular traffic driver for the company.
bigbasket is creating milestones in the online retail market and is currently the one-stop-shop for all kinds of products with industry leading delivery turnaround of within two hours. The company’s operations have expanded to 26 cities in India, recording a registered customer base of over 15 million.
