Nara, in association with Swades Foundation will commemorate the beginning of the Thai New Year, Songkran, by providing drinking water and water facilities to rural households in Raigad district of Maharashtra.

Through this initiative, Swades Foundation will create rain-water harvesting measures, water storage facilities, distribution of 200 litre potable water per day per household (HH) through HH taps round the year and more.

Patrons who visit the Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) restaurant for lunch between noon and 4pm and dinner between 7pm and 1am until April 30, 2018 can order the Khao Phad Samunprai, the butterfly pea fried rice, and a bottle of water. The proceeds will go to Swades Foundation.

“We are elated to celebrate Songkran at Nara, Mumbai. The festival, Songkran, is celebrated in Thailand with amicable water fights and everyone taking to the streets to splash water at one another,” said Karyna Bajaj, executive director, KA Hospitality Pvt. Ltd.

“Keeping water at the heart of the festival, we at Nara, in association with  Swades Foundation, will be providing water to households in rural villages, along with developing infrastructure in these villages for better storage & distribution of water,” she added.

“It is a very thoughtful gesture from Nara to link their campaign with uplifting rural lives through provision of water,” stated Mangesh Wange, chief executive officer, Swades Foundation.

“This is a cause which is pivotal to rural empowerment, and we are deeply attached to it since 2013, having brought drinking water to over 28,000 rural households through our sustained efforts in water and sanitation and the support of our partners,” he added.

Songkran falls on the day when the sun changes position in the zodiac. On this occasion, water is deemed to be a holy element. It signifies the spiritual cleansing and purifying of bad luck or grievances, and is also believed to bless individuals with fortune and happiness for the year ahead.

The festival originated with locals collecting water that had been poured over Buddha statues for cleansing. This holy water is then trickled onto the shoulders of village elders and families, which signifies as a blessing for the New Year.

Songkran has now developed into a kingdom-wide water fight, occurring in April, which happens to be Thailand’s hottest month of the year.
