Defence Food Research Laboratory (DFRL), Mysuru, signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Arunima Food, Bengaluru, for transfer of high energy and nutrifood bar technologies.

Rakesh Kumar Sharma, director, DFRL, and Pallavi Bohra Purohit, owner, Arunima Food, Bengaluru, signed the agreements at DFRL.

The inventors, M C Pandey (Scientist G), Jayathilakan (Scientist E), K A Srihari (Scientist C) and Aisha Tabassum, technical officer, along with A D Semwal, Scientist G and head, technology transfer division, senior scientists and M Pal Murugan, Scientist D, DFRL, were present during the event.

Arunima Food, established in 2016, is engaged in the manufacture of nutritious, energy-dense, organic bars which are hygienically packaged. The product is designed to meet the needs of children and the working population.

Energy bars have gained importance and popularity in the global market since the 1980s. Earlier, these energy bars proved promising for sportspersons who were involved in strong physical activity and needed a greater source of energy during peak performance.

According to DFRL, due to the increasing focus on the nutrition and healthy food habits and an increasing number of people involved in greater physical activity, energy bars have become a perfect choice as a quality source of energy.

DFRL has developed different types of nutritious energy bars to cater to the requirement of the armed forces. These include compressed tasty bar, composite cereal bar (protein rich bars), sweet and sour tasty bar (provide variety in the armed forces), flax oat tasty bar (rich in soluble fibre), soy-fortified oat bar, ergogenic bar (energy-dense), barley bar (rich in soluble fibre ß-glucan), omega-3- rich bar (rich in omega-3 fatty acids), fibre-enriched bar, cocoa delight bar (antioxidant- and fibre-rich), chicken bars, etc. for desert and high altitudes.

“Each bar is targeted with a specific functional ingredient provides maximum health benefits with a calorific value ranging between 400 and 540Kcal with a shelf life of 6-15 months with good organoleptic acceptance, as compared to the bars available in the market, which usually have limited shelf life of 4-6 months,” stated DFRL.
