An 11-member delegation representing the Solvent Extractors’ Association (SEA) of India, the premier vegetable oil industry delegation and the trade promotion organisation recognised by the ministry of commerce, is in Ukraine to study that country’s sunflower seed complex, understand its production, processing and export facilities and study its logistic facilities to supply sunfower oil, sunflower oilcake and sunflower seed, which will later be processed in India.

The delegation was led by Atul Chaturvedi, chief executive officer (agri business), Adani Group, Ahmedabad, and president, SEA, while Sandeep Bajoria, chief executive officer, Sunvin Oils, Mumbai, was named his deputy. SEA was also represented by its executive director, B V Mehta.

The other members were Vijay Data, managing director, Vijay Solvex Ltd, Alwar; Ajay Jhunjhunwala, managing director, J R Agro Industries Ltd, Lucknow; Ali Kader, director, Liberty Oil Mills Ltd, Mumbai; K T V Kannan, managing director, K T V Health Pvt Ltd, Chennai; Ravindra Kumar Gupta, managing director, Saraiwwalla Agrr Refiners Ltd, Hyderabad; Vikram Khajanchi, general manager, Emami Agrotech Ltd, Kolkata; Siddharth R Amin, director, Dr Amin Controllers Pvt Ltd, Mumbai, and Nirav Desai, partner, GGN International, Indore.
During the tour, which is slated to conclude on August 5, 2017, they will also establish a direct rapport with Ukraine’s sunflower seed  farmers, producers and exporters of sunflower seed oil, oilcake and sunflower seeds to enable easier trade and import by India. The Indian embassy in Kiev organised a meeting with India’s ambassador to Ukraine and major producers and exporters of sunflower oil.

India is heavily dependent on imports to meet its edible oil requirement. To meet the domestic requirement, over 70 per cent of edible oil needs to be imported.
Further, sunflower seed production in India has declined to half over the last five years.  In the year 2011-12, India produced 6,00,000 tonne of sunflower seed, but now it produces only 3,00,000 tonne. Likewise, to meet the domestic demand, the import of sunflower oil has increased from 5,40,000 tonne in 2007-08 to 16,40,000 tonne now.
Sunflower oil is one of the most preferred oil for cooking in households across India, and over the decade, its demand has been on the rise. Ukraine is one of the major growers of sunflower seed and the major exporter of sunflower oil and sunflower cake in the world market.
