In an unprecedented industry move, Adani Wilmar Limited, the largest seller of edible oil in the country, has replaced the packaging of one-litre pouches of Fortune, its popular brand, with recyclable plastic nationally. It is the first edible oil company to introduce recyclable packaging for oil pouches in India.

The fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) company has taken this initiative to limit environmental waste and support the Government of India’s agenda of reducing wastage of plastic.

Adani Wilmar has an exclusive agreement with Ahmedabad-based Vishakha Polyfab Private Limited (VPPL) to avail sole usage rights of introducing and marketing eco-friendly packaging across the edible oil industry. It has sourced plastic films made of unique formulation of polyethylene (PE) resins from the supplier to create a sustainable PE laminate solution.

The company sources nearly 300 million tonne (MT) of plastic films for packaging per month, and a kg of film produces approximate 130 pouches. The estimated count touches nearly 47 crore pouch/litre of oil per annum being packed sustainably.

The innovative formulation of polyethylene (PE) resin has been certified by the Central Institute of Plastics Engineering and Technology (CIPET), an agency under the Department of Chemicals and Petrochemicals, Government of India.

The certificate of endorsement has stated that the co-extruded multi-layer film can be recycled. The new recyclable pouch has also passed the company’s internal laboratory tests, including a DRAT Impact test, a drop test and an ink adhesion test.

Speaking on the initiative, Angshu Mallick, chief operating officer, Adani Wilmar, said, “As a group we have always had a strong commitment towards sustainable environmental practices.”

“We, thus, take pride, as Adani Wilmar is the first in the edible oil industry to use recycled plastic pouches for the packaging of Fortune, our largest-selling edible oil brand,” he added.

“Consumers of today have an increased awareness and willingness to undertake initiatives that help in reducing their overall ecological footprint, and we believe our move to recyclable packaging will further empower them. We are working towards extending this recyclable packaging across our other brands nationally,” Mallick said.

Adani Wilmar’s portfolio comprises cottonseed, soybean, sunflower, rice bran and groundnut oils.

In addition to Fortune, brands such as Aadhar, Kings, Fryola, Raag Gold and Alpha have garnered a healthy market share.

Every edible oil pouch carries a prominent, enlarged international symbol for recycling symbolized by curved, folded arrows forming a triangle in the front of every pouch.

Adani Wilmar exports to 19 countries across the world, making a mark in the global market too. After having dominated the industry as a numero uno producer of edible oils, the company has already expanded its portfolio, adding consumer essentials, such as soy nuggets, basmati rice, besan, pulses and vanaspati.
