At the two-day meeting of the Indiastar Awards 2017’s grand jury, which concluded at the headquarters of the Indian Institute of Packaging (IIP) - the apex body for packaging and  promotion standards - in Mumbai recently, the best were picked from among the entries received as nominations.

The jury comprised eminent persons from institutions and government bodies, alongside industry experts, who assessed the entries and evaluated them on the basis of a set of parameters and guidelines that was laid down. IIP was represented on it by its director, N C Saha.

The other members included G V Sreekumar, head, Industrial Design Centre (IDC), Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IITB); Santosh Kshirsagar, dean, Sir J J School of Art; Kiran Prayagi, consultant, Graphic Arts Technology and Education; Hitesh Bhatt, director, marketing and communication, Retailers Association of India (RAI); Hemant Ranadive, vice-president, production services, FCB India, and Tarun Deep Girdher, senior faculty, National Institute of Design (NID), Ahmedabad.

Nominations were received in eclectic categories, including consumer packages, eco-friendly packages, food packages, pharmaceutical packages, packaging materials and adjuncts, transport packages and packages designed by students.

Saha said, “This year, the number of nominations and entries surpassed all previous records. We are extremely happy with the response. Also, each of the nominations received was of the highest quality.”

“This just goes to show that the Indiastar Awards is one of the most prestigious recognitions in the field of packaging. On behalf of IIP, I would like to thank the jury for choosing and recognising the best talent in the field,” he added.

Shekhar Amberkar, assistant director, IIP, and co-ordinator for the awards, said, “This year, the awards created a record for the highest number of entries received for a year (622).”

“The quality of nominations too has been extremely promising, reiterating the credibility and competitive spirit of the awards,” he added.

The student category - a special category of awards established to recognise young talent and develop future packing technologists - too received an overwhelming response.

The awards will be presented in New Delhi on October 28 this year. The ceremony, which will be held in concurrence with the 2017 essays of Indiapack Pacprocess and the International Summit for Packaging Industry (ISPI), will be attended by industry stalwarts, award winners, government representatives and foreign delegates.

Instituted in 1972 with the objective of encouraging excellence in packaging design, innovation and sustainability, the awards are held once every two years.
