The matter related to Front of Pack Labelling of food products has landed in the Prime Minister Office after a nutritional advocacy group wrote to the Prime Minister to look into it.
The group called Nutrition Advocacy in Public Interest in India (NAPi) wrote a letter to the PM expressing concern about a ‘decision’ taken by FSSAI in a meeting of Stakeholders on Front of Pack Labelling (FOPL) to accept Health Star Rating (HSR) as its method of FOPL.
“We urge you (PM) to intervene using your highest office, to change the ‘decision’ taken by FSSAI,” read the letter.
NAPi suggested the government frame a parliamentary law to halt the rise of consumption of unhealthy foods that includes restriction of aggressive marketing as an urgent measure. The FOPL nutrition warning system should be immediately implemented and made mandatory based on WHO Standards, read the letter and added that an educational campaign for people to understand what are unhealthy foods must be launched along with highest GST rates for ‘unhealthy’ foods.
It is pertinent to mention that the FSSAI had commissioned a study by IIM Ahmedabad on the subject of Front of Pack Labelling. IIM-A had submitted the study report along with various suggestions, including Health Star Ratings for food products.
