Manpower crunch-ridden FDA Maharashtra appointing to fill vacant posts
Wednesday, 09 August, 2017, 08 : 00 AM [IST]
Shraddha Joshi, Mumbai
Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Maharashtra, which has been facing a manpower crunch for a while, has been making new appointments to fill the vacancies over the last few days.

Although this has always been a cause for concern, it is pertinent to note that a number of the posts that have been lying vacant are those of senior officers.

Recruiting these will help the state FDA get its desired workforce in place. In a bid to address this, the state FDA took the matter up with the government.

Pallavi Darade, commissioner, FDA Maharashtra, said, “At our recent meeting, at which we decided to promote the seniormost assistant commissioner to the post of joint commissioner.”

“In this regard, we have already received orders. The officers will assume office soon,” she added.

As soon as the joint commissioner’s post is filled, the assistant commissioners’ promotions will take place.

At present, there are 21 vacancies for the post of assistant commissioner, and the state FDA will fill 19 of those.

In a circular, the state government has directed the FDA that upon completing the verification process, it should ask the food safety officers (FSOs) their preferences regarding their postings.

Darade informed, “As per the circular, we have already dispatched the letters to the respective officers to know about their preferences.”

“Once we receive their feedback, they will be posted with immediate effect. Again, this procedure will take a month’s time,” she added.

“Apart from the higher posts in the officer cadre, about 60-odd food safety officers’ (FSO) posts were also lying vacant. These are currently being run on an in-charge basis,” Darade said.

An official from FDA Maharashtra informed, “To overcome this, 46 new FSOs have been recently posted after receiving their feedback on the division postings.”

“Along with these, new postings of drug inspector and assistant drug inspector and promotions of class-to-class clerical-level officers are taking place simultaneously at FDA,” he added.

“So, we are processing at a good pace, and in a month’s time, we will have the entire workforce in place,” the official said.

Recently, the state FDA also sent a proposal for 200-odd data entry operators to be sent by the state government. This has also been cleared by the information technology (IT) department.

“So across the cadre, be it from Group A, B, C or D, the decisions are being taken,” Darade said.

“Things have been moving in a positive direction, and if not 100 per cent, at least 80 to 90 per cent strength will be in place,” she added.
