FSSAI suspends licences of 15 food businesses for non-compliance

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has suspended the licences of 15 food businesses for not complying with the direction issued by the apex food regulator under FSS Act, 2006.
These food businesses were from Kerala and involved in high risk food category business. The FSSAI, in a statement, has said that even after several intimations the food businesses did not pay heed to the directions and did not conduct the third-party audit, which is mandatory for high risk category food products.
FSSAI, in a statement, has said, “To strengthen the food safety surveillance system, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has envisaged audits of Food Business Operators through Private Auditing Agencies. In order to cultivate and foster the self-compliance culture, FSSAI is enabling compliance through private recognised Auditing Agencies. Food Safety and Standards (Food Safety Auditing) Regulations, 2018, was notified on 28th August, 2018, that mandates annual third-party food safety audits of food businesses falling under six high risk categories by a FSSAI recognised agency."
"However, even after repeated intimation and issuance of improvement notices twice, these FBOs belonging to the Kerala region have not conducted any third-party food safety audits.”
The suspension of the licences of the FBOs came into effect from September 13.
“The non-compliance of mandatory audits by these FBOs in high risk food business operations has been viewed seriously and their FSSAI licence has been suspended with effect from 13.09.2021 fore-noon by Central Designated Officer, Kerala & Lakshadweep, in accordance with section 32 (2) of Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006 rules and regulations made thereunder,” the statement added.
