The Bihar government has urged the union government to look into the subject of adulteration in pan masala and revoke the licences of companies producing such products.
According to sources, the government of the eastern state ordered the testing of 15 brands of pan masala, and following the tests at National Tobacco Testing Laboratory (NTTL), Noida, it was found that these brands contained nicotine and magnesium carbonate.
The state authorities have sent a letter in this regard to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, saying that on testing these samples in the state labs of various pan masala brands in the state, adulterants like magnesium carbonate and nicotine were found, which was in contravention of the Food Safety and Standards Regulations, 2011, which prohibit the production of any food products containing nicotine.
These brands have, therefore, been banned in the state of Bihar.
The state authorities also sent samples to the NTTL, which corroborated the results achieved by the state labs.
An official with the FSSAI informed that the apex food regulator had received a communiqué in this regard, while it was under consideration.
It is pertinent to mention here that the Bihar government has banned the sale, production and distribution of the nicotine containing products since May 2012 as under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, such products are prohibited to be manufactured which contain nicotine or any adulterant.
Recently, Rajasthan also banned pan masala and gutka after Bihar and Maharashtra.
