F&F sector in transition to natural, but supply concern, opines expert
Wednesday, 17 April, 2019, 08 : 00 AM [IST]
Vijetha Iyer, Mumbai
The flavours and fragrances (F&F) industry is moving towards natural from synthetic and the consumer sentiment is driving this. However the supplies of natural fragrances and flavours is a concern. This observation was made by an expert at the Flavours and Fragrances Expo, which commenced at the Bombay Convention and Exhibition Centre in Mumbai on Tuesday. The show will be on until April 17, 2019.

The expert, Sitaram Dixit, independent consultant, flavours and fragrance, and chairman, Guidance Society of India, made this observation on the sidelines of the event while commenting on the recent developments in the flavours and fragrance industry.

“The main thing is that the commercialisation of natural fragrances and flavours is necessary to meet the demands. There is a demand and supply issue for naturals and only if this problem is solved, things will change,” he added.

Vijai Agnihotri, scientist, natural plant product division, CSIR - Institute of Himalayan Bioresource Technology, Palampur, Himachal Pradesh, said, “The seminar will be useful for the people in the industry. It is basically a networking platform. Since there are two events happening at the same venue, people will be busy attending it. Moreover, there is an event about fragrances in Dubai today. Some people might have gone there to attend it,” he added.

Commenting about the new developments in flavours and fragrances, Melwyn Fernandes, event director, flavours and fragrances, Procure Exhibitions and Events, said, “There are new F&F academic tools, so we show the cultivation process, plucking,  extraction sites and application sites. Hence, this event will serve as a knowledge-sharing platform for the attendees.

The event was inaugurated by Chandrakant Salunkhe, president, SME Chamber of India.
