The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has officially notified the Food Safety and Standards (Vegan Foods) Amendment Regulations, 2026, establishing a new, standardised logo for vegan products.
Under this directive, it is now compulsory for all approved vegan food items sold in the country to prominently display the prescribed logo, starting July 1, 2027.
The initiative aims to eliminate market ambiguity and establish a reliable national identity for India's rapidly growing plant-based food sector. Currently, consumers looking for animal-free options face difficulties verifying claims, as the traditional green-dot vegetarian symbol still permits dairy, honey, and other animal derivatives.
The newly finalised regulatory logo consists of a green, square-framed emblem featuring a stylised letter "V" paired with a sprouting leaf, underlined by the word "VEGAN." FSSAI has issued precise guidelines covering the logo's dimensions, colouring, and placement to ensure complete formatting consistency across both local and imported goods.
Industry experts note that growing consumer demand for authentic plant-based items led the food regulator to strengthen the legal framework around the emerging "vegan" category.
The standardised, government-approved logo will give shoppers an instant visual tool to verify the claims of food businesses, significantly boosting consumer trust and transparency in the marketplace.
Also, by setting the enforcement timeline for mid-2027, the FSSAI provides manufacturers with an adequate transition window to update their retail packaging.
