FSSAI urges FBOs to appoint nodal officers for redressal of grievances

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has urged food business operators (FBOs) to appoint officers for the redressal of grievances or complaints forwarded by them.

The apex regulator stated that it had been receiving several complaints and grievances from citizens about food safety across the country.

FSSAI said the designated nodal officers should not be below the rank of senior manager as a single-point contact for complaint handling.

It stated that quick responses to the grievances of consumers was an important aspect of the food safety ecosystem.

In a letter circulated amongst the FBOs, FSSAI stated that it had launched a food safety connect mechanism, wherein it provided the consumers accessibility via various interfaces like e-mail, a website, a mobile application, WhatsApp number, a Twitter account, a toll-free number and a Facebook account.

FSSAI stated that in case of grievance redressal, it would contact the appointed nodal officer. The food regulator urged companies to appoint such officers at the earliest.

Meanwhile, the experts have called it a part of the mechanism which is already there.

“The companies must have a customer care number properly displayed on the package. This is mere extension of the already laid norms. This is a positive development,” said Prabodh Halde, president, Association of Food Scientists and Technology (India) [AFST(I)].
