July ’18 Wholesale Price Index for all commodities up by 0.4% to 119.7

The official Wholesale Price Index (WPI) for all commodities (with 2011-12=100 as the base) for the month of July 2018 rose by 0.4 per cent to 119.7 (provisional) from 119.2 (provisional) for the previous month.

Inflation
The annual rate of inflation, based on monthly WPI, stood at 5.09 per cent (provisional) for the month of July 2018 (over July 2017) as compared to 5.77 per cent (provisional) for the previous month and 1.88 per cent during the corresponding month of the previous year. The build-up inflation rate in the financial year so far was 2.92 per cent compared to a build-up rate of 0.62 per cent in the corresponding period of the previous year.

Inflation for important commodities/commodity groups is indicated in Annex-I and Annex-II. The movement of the index for the various commodity groups is summarised below.

Primary articles (Weight 22.62 per cent)
The index for this major group rose by 1.3 per cent to 134.9 (provisional) from 133.2 (provisional) for the previous month.

The groups and items which showed variations during the month are as follows:
The index for the food articles group rose by 2.1 percent to 144.7 (provisional) from 141.7 (provisional) for the previous month due to the higher price of peas/chawali (eight per cent), fruits and vegetables (seven per cent), gram (six per cent), bajra (three per cent), moong, egg,  condiments and spices and fish-inland (two per cent each) and poultry chicken, wheat, tea, urad, paddy and milk (one per cent each). However, the price of betel leaves (16 per cent), arhar (two per cent) and pork and barley (one per cent each) declined.

The index for the non-food articles group rose by 0.8 per cent to 123.5 (provisional) from 122.5 (provisional) for the previous month due to higher price of floriculture (11 per cent), guar seed (nine per cent), castor seed (seven per cent), raw cotton (five per cent), sunflower (four per cent), rape and mustard seed, raw jute, groundnut seed and raw rubber (three per cent each), coir fibre, mesta, linseed and gingelly seed (two per cent each) and cotton seed (one per cent). However, the price of raw silk (11 per cent), niger seed (seven per cent), fodder (four per cent), safflower (kardi seed) (three per cent) and soybean and copra (coconut) (two per cent each) declined.

Manufactured products (Weight 64.23 per cent)
The index for this major group rose by 0.1 per cent to 117.4 (provisional) from 117.3 (provisional) for the previous month.

The groups and items which showed variations during the month are as follows:
The index for the manufacture of food products group rose by 0.4 per cent to 129 (provisional) from 128.5 (provisional) for the previous month due to higher price of gram powder (besan) (eight per cent), maida, castor oil, sugar and mustard oil (four per cent each), sooji (rawa) (three per cent), gur, wheat flour (atta), manufacture of processed ready-to-eat food and manufacture of cocoa, chocolate and sugar confectionery (two per cent each) and cotton seed oil, basmati rice, groundnut oil, manufacture of macaroni, noodles, couscous and similar farinaceous products, processed tea, manufacture of prepared animal feeds, manufacture of bakery products, rice bran oil, vanaspati and manufacture of health supplements (one per cent each). However, the price of molasses (21 per cent), coffee powder with chicory, instant coffee and salt (three per cent each), powder milk, rice products, honey, palm oil and ice cream (two per cent each) and copra oil, rice (non-basmati), spices (including mixed spices), ghee, chicken/duck (dressed-fresh/frozen), butter, processing and preserving of fruit and vegetables and processing and preserving of fish, crustaceans and molluscs and products thereof (one per cent each) declined.

The index for the manufacture of beverages group declined by 0.3 per cent to 119.6 (provisional) from 119.9 (provisional) for the previous month due to the lower price of aerated drinks/soft drinks (including soft drink concentrates) (two per cent). However, the price of bottled mineral water (two per cent) and country liquor, rectified spirit and wine (one per cent each) moved up.

WPI Food Index (Weight 24.38 per cent)
The rate of inflation based on WPI Food Index consisting of food articles from the primary articles group and food products from the manufactured products group increased from 1.56 per cent in June 2018 to -0.86 per cent in July 2018.

Final index for the month of May 2018 (Base year: 2011-12=100)
For the month of May, 2018, the final Wholesale Price Index for all commodities (with 2011-12=100 as the base) stood at 118.3 as compared to 117.9 (provisional) and the annual rate of inflation based on final index stood at 4.78 per cent as compared to 4.43 per cent (provisional), respectively, as reported on June 14, 2018.
