Karnataka government has established a platform to enhance the growth and sale of organic products and millets. This focus has led to the state to be recognised as the capital of organics and millets in the country. The health benefits and ease of cultivation of millets have encouraged the farmers to cultivate the same. These facts were the highlight of the three-day Organics and Millets 2019 International Trade Fair, which was inaugurated here on Friday.
Efforts are on by the state government to include millets into mid-day meals and Indira canteens. In mid-day meal for schools across the state, the government aims to introduce the same once a week as it will provide the much-needed nutrition.
“We have always supported the farmers with several initiatives and programmes to ensure their welfare. The push to encourage farmers to cultivate more organics and millets rather than focussing on rice cultivation is yet another initiative that will benefit farmers immensely,” said Karnataka Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy at the inaugural of the fair.
The farmers in the state have often faced with deficient rainfall and face difficulty in growing crops. Many farmers opt for rice cultivation as there is a high demand for rice. “If we compare millets to rice, the former requires almost 70 per cent less water, no pesticides making them most environment-friendly,” he pointed out.
