Oiltech Pavilion & place2beer on debut at this year’s drink technology India
Wednesday, 17 October, 2018, 08 : 00 AM [IST]
Shraddha Joshi, Mumbai
Oiltech Pavilion and place2beer, will be the highlights at the 2018 essay of drink technology India (dti), the trade fair dedicated to the beverage, dairy and liquid food industries, which is slated to take place at Bombay Convention and Exhibition Centre, Mumbai between October 24 and 26.

The event has been developed, marketed and organised by Messe Muenchen India Pvt. Ltd.

Tailored programme for industry
drink technology India, the central and leading platform for the beverage, dairy and liquid food industry in India, is further expanding its reach. In 2019, the trade fair will be held in Bangalore for the first time making market penetration through regional focus.

The trade fair changed its annual format last year as a way of responding to the market’s regional needs. dti is taking another step forward by holding two trade fairs in odd-numbered years. In the future, the trade fair will be held twice during odd-numbered years. In the spring in Bangalore between February 28 and March 2, 2019 at Bangalore International Exhibition Centre and in the winter in New Delhi between December 5 and 7, 2019 at NSIC grounds.

Mumbai will remain the meeting place for the industry during even-numbered years. Focal topics will be set for the segments at the three venues and aimed at the market potential of the regions.

Bhupinder Singh, chief executive officer, Messe München India, said, “India is a huge country. By applying the new local approach to dti, we will reach relevant visitor groups in the regions in a more systematic manner. Tapping this potential is a key value-added factor for our customers.”

Mumbai being the international hub for India’s beverage and liquid food industry, in even-numbered years, visitors from all parts of India will continue to see the latest innovations developed by companies from India and all other parts of the world, in areas that range from the production, filling and packaging of all types of beverages to liquid food.

Giving the format details, Singh added, “In New Delhi and Bangalore, Indian exhibitors will primarily meet visitors from these metropolitan areas. The trade fairs held in these two cities will also cover the entire product chain of the beverage and liquid food industry. But focus will be placed on particular segments in a reflection of the different presence of individual industries.”

He stated, “The focus of the New Delhi metropolitan region is beer, soft drinks and dairy products. Bangalore will more closely highlight juices, beer, hard liquor and food. Thanks to this regional position and the focal topics, dti will be an ideal meeting place for each particular region. Visitor potential will be optimally tapped in the process.”

Beverage and liquid food market
Whether it is soft drinks, alcoholic beverages, dairy products or edible oils: the demand for beverages and liquid food products in India has been on the rise for years.

The Indian food and beverage market is growing dynamically. Sales produced by the sectors for soft drinks and alcoholic beverages like beer, wine and hard liquor are climbing sharply. The reasons for this include the rising population, a growing and consumption-oriented middle class and the continuing urbanisation. The continuing spread of modern trade structures, such as supermarkets, also favours the growth in the beverage and liquid food sector.

Euromonitor International forecasts growth of more than 100 per cent by 2021 for soft drinks and about 35 per cent for alcoholic beverages during the same period. Sales of dairy products are expected to climb by more than 20 per cent. Oils and fats will jump by about 70 per cent by 2021, according to the forecast. This growth is being fueled by social change and strong economic growth.

According to VDMA, food processing and packaging machinery association, the total demand for beverages is expected to increase by around 89 per cent by 2022, from more than 27 billion litre in 2017 to over 50 billion litre.

Richard Clemens, managing director of the VDMA, explains, “Local beverage production grew by 63 per cent over the period from 2012 to 2017 and reached a value of approximately 13.8 billion euros in 2017. Further growth of nine per cent per year is expected over the next few years.”

In order to meet demand and continue to grow, Indian companies need appropriate machinery for the production, processing and packaging of beverages and liquid food. According to the VDMA, India is one of the most important sales markets in Asia for companies manufacturing such equipment.

Alcoholic beverages becoming popular
India currently ranks ninth among the 10 largest buying countries for alcoholic beverages. Here, beer and spirits rank first and second. Beer is becoming increasingly popular, especially among the younger Indian population. According to the VDMA, sales are expected to increase by 22 per cent by 2022. India is already the world's second-largest market for spirits behind China. Here, the VDMA is expecting growth of just under 14 per cent over the same period.

The supporting programme of dti provides important stimuli with regard to the subject of alcoholic beverages.

Continuing demand for edible oils
In India, the topic of fats and oils is on the rise. The demand for edible oils in India is currently growing rapidly. According to the VDMA, demand is growing faster than the country’s own production. Sales more than doubled between 2012 and 2017. The VDMA anticipates further growth in demand over the next five years from just under 13 million tonne (2017) to more than 19 million tonne (2022). This corresponds to an increase of 58 per cent.

Growth in all segments of industry
In addition to alcoholic beverages and edible oils, there are also indications of increased demand for other product categories.

According to the VDMA, the total sales of soft drinks, for example, are expected to more than double to 43 billion litre by 2022. India’s soft drinks industry is expected to register steady growth. The soft drinks industry is witnessing greater use of natural ingredients including higher juice content and lower sugar content in most beverages. As per Statista, the market size of soft drinks to reach 131,001 million $ by 2022. The soft drinks industry in India is growing at 6-7 per cent per annum. Revenue in the soft drinks segment amounts to US$3,266m in 2018 with the average per capita consumption standing at 4.1L.

For bottled water, the VDMA even forecasts an increase in sales by 156 per cent. With a rise in health awareness and the easy availability of bottled water, the per capita consumption of bottled water in India is on the increase. Growth of sales of bottled water is being driven by rising incomes. The market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 22%, to reach Rs 160bn in FY 2018. Packaged water segment is expected to have a market size of Rs 21,500 crore.

India is the third-largest market for dairy products behind USA and China—and at the same time the world's largest milk producer. According to the VDMA, an average annual increase in the demand for dairy products of 4.4 per cent is expected for the period from 2017 to 2022.

India’s packaged juice market has charted a high growth trajectory, thanks to its easy availability, anytime-anywhere consumption, and convenience. Millennials in India are more health-conscious and monitor what they consume. The Indian juice industry was pegged at US$3.5 billion in 2012 and is estimated to reach US$21.14 billion by 2018. The fruit-based beverages category has grown at a CAGR of over 30 per cent over the past decade.

Beer is globally the third-most popular drink after water and tea. The beer industry is on the rise according to the craft beer hype. Craft beer has boosted the business of micro-breweries in India. India beer market is projected to grow at a CAGR of over 7.6 per cent during 2018-2024. India is among the top five beer markets in Asia-Pacific in terms of volume. The beer industry in India has more than 85 large breweries. The sales of craft beer is witnessing a growth of 20 per cent year-on-year.

The wine production increased in India due to a growing middle class. Major wine producers in Europe are likely to set up their manufacturing facility in the country considering it is a lucrative market. Wine consumption in India is likely to reach about 37 million litre by 2018 from the level of 18 million litre as of 2014. Indian liquor continues to dominate the top 100 spirits brands worldwide. The alcoholic beverages market growth rate to reach a value of Rs 5.3 trillion in FY 2026.

Revenue in the sauces and condiments segment amounts to US$4,951m in 2018. The market is expected to grow annually by 7.1% (CAGR 2018-2021).

According to VDMA/Euromonitor International, the sales of edible oil are projected to grow up to 70 per cent by 2021. Owing to the high growth projected in India for oilseeds, oils and fats and its derivatives, the pavilion will feature products and technologies pertaining to raw and auxiliary materials, production and processing, logistics, quality control and assurance, research, filling and packaging technology, deep frying and more.

The exhibition is thereby responding to the increasing importance of the topic of oils and fats for the Indian market.

Indiapack & pacprocess and FoodPex India
Indiapack, pacprocess and FoodPex India with its defined focus on the processing and packaging industry will bring together technology specialists and decision-makers from all segments of the Indian packaging industry and will provide a future-oriented, innovative business platform.

For all major branches of the packaging and processing industry the event gets enormous business potential. From 2015 to 2020 the turnover of the packaging industry in India is set to increase annually by 18 per cent - to US$73 billion. In 2015, the per capita consumption of packaging in India was just 8.6kg. As a comparison in China in the same year this was 20kg, in Germany 42kg, in USA even 71kg. In 2025, the consumer-happy and discerning middle class in India will number more than 500 million. Modern retail concepts will increasingly facilitate their access to products packed to a high quality.

India is the second-largest producer worldwide of agricultural products, but the level of food processing is comparatively low. More than 90 per cent of basic household products are unpackaged, huge quantities of food deteriorate on the way from field to super market. The Indian government has reacted by investing virtually US$1 billion in food processing over the next few years. This promises great sales potential for foreign companies as well.

Thus Foodpex and Indiapack & pacprocess act as perfect synergies for number of business opportunities.

Conclusion
By switching to an annual cycle, dti is responding to the developments in the Indian beverage, dairy and liquid food sectors.

This rhythm, combined with alternating venues, takes into account the requirements of the Indian market and presents a need-oriented platform in all the regions of India.
