Food adulteration continues to be a major challenge in Cuttack even though the Silver City has set rules and regulations in place for monitoring food safety.
Earlier in December, a joint raid carried out by Inspector In-Charge of Malgodown, Jagatpur, ACP (Zone-1), and officials of Cuttack Municipal Corporation’s (CMC) health wing, busted a counterfeit soya chunks manufacturing unit.
Since then over 20 different types of units with prevalence of food adulteration including paneer, rice, ghee, spices and edible oil have come to light but the state authorities have failed in the enforcement of these set mandates due to shortage of trained staff.
The fact that such units continue to churn out contaminated food products for years and steer clear of the state food authorities has the public questioning the conduct of the Cuttack Municipal Corporation (CMC) and the district administration.
However, the failure to conduct inspection and take appropriate action against the culprits is being attributed to the engagement of officials towards Covid-19 cases and other pressing duties.
Another serious issue that remains is that there is no permanent food safety officer (FSO) in CMC, making it virtually impossible for smooth functioning of inspection of facilities for food adulteration.
