Wholesale Price Index for all commodities for June 2018 rises by 1.1%

The official Wholesale Price Index (WPI) for all commodities (Base: 2011-12=100) for the month of June 2018 rose by 1.1 per cent to 119.2 (provisional) from 117.9 (provisional) for the previous month.

Inflation
The annual rate of inflation, based on monthly WPI, stood at 5.77 per cent (provisional) for the month of June 2018 (over June 2017) as compared to 4.43 per cent (provisional) for the previous month and 0.90 per cent during the corresponding month of the previous year. Build-up inflation rate in the financial year so far was 2.49 per cent compared to a build-up rate of -0.44 per cent in the corresponding period of the previous year.

The inflation for important commodities/commodity groups is indicated in Annex-I and Annex-II.

The movement of the index for the various commodity groups is summarised below:

Primary articles (Weight: 22.62 per cent)
The index for this major group rose by two per cent to 133.2 (provisional) from 130.6 (provisional) for the previous month.

The groups and items which showed variations during the month are as follows:

The index for the food articles group rose by 1.1 per cent to 141.7 (provisional) from 140.1 (provisional) for the previous month due to higher price of eggs (five per cent), fruits and vegetables (four per cent), maize and fish-marine (three per cent each), jowar (two per cent) and barley, bajra, beef and buffalo meat, wheat, coffee, condiments and spices, milk and poultry chicken (one per cent each).  However, the price of betel leaves (14 per cent), urad, arhar and gram (two per cent each) and ragi, masur and moong (one per cent each) declined.

The index for the non-food articles group rose by 2.9 per cent to 122.5 (provisional) from 119.1 (provisional) for the previous month due to higher price of raw cotton (11 per cent), industrial wood (eight per cent), safflower (kardi seed) (three per cent), sunflower, groundnut seed, cotton seed, linseed, mesta and hides (raw) (two per cent each) and raw rubber, raw wool, castor seed, gingelly seed and coir fibre (one per cent each).   However, the price of niger seed (seven per cent), guar seed and raw silk (four per cent each), copra (coconut) and soybean (two per cent each) and floriculture (one per cent) declined.

Manufactured products (Weight: 64.23 per cent)
The index for this major group rose by 0.4 per cent to 117.3 (provisional) from 116.8 (provisional) for the previous month.

The groups and items which showed variations during the month are as follows:

The index for the manufacture of food products group rose by one per cent to 128.5 (provisional) from 127.2 (provisional) for the previous month due to higher price of sugar (seven per cent), rice products (four per cent), coffee powder with chicory, manufacture of macaroni, noodles, couscous and similar farinaceous products, gur and processed tea (three per cent each), chicken [duck (dressed, fresh/frozen)], instant coffee and spices (including mixed spices) (two per cent each) and mustard oil, bagasse, molasses, sunflower oil, palm oil, rapeseed oil, salt, manufacture of health supplements, manufacture of prepared animal feeds, rice bran oil,  manufacture of processed ready-to-eat food, sooji (rawa), butter, buffalo meat (fresh/frozen), condensed milk, maida, other meats [preserved/processed] and castor oil (one per cent each).

However, the price of wheat bran and soyabean oil (three per cent each),  processing and preserving of fish, crustaceans and molluscs and products thereof (two per cent)  and processing and preservation of fruit and vegetables, powder milk, copra oil, ice cream, manufacture of cocoa, chocolate and sugar confectionery, manufacture of starches and starch products and groundnut oil (one per cent each) declined.

The index for the manufacture of beverages group rose by 0.3 per cent to 119.9 (provisional) from 119.5 (provisional) for the previous month due to higher price of country liquor (two per cent) and beer and spirits (one per cent each). However, the price of bottled mineral water (two per cent) and rectified spirit (one per cent) declined.

WPI Food Index (Weight: 24.38 per cent)
The rate of inflation based on WPI Food Index consisting of food articles from the primary articles group and food products from the manufactured products group increased from 1.12 per cent in May 2018 to 1.56 per cent in June 2018.

Final index for the month of April 2018 (Base  year: 2011-12=100)
For the month of April 2018, the final Wholesale Price Index for all commodities (Base: 2011-12=100) stood at 117.3 as compared to 116.8 (provisional) and annual rate of inflation based on final index stood at 3.62 per cent as compared to 3.18 per cent (provisional), respectively.
