ORANGE CITY FOOD PARK: MAIDC's extravagant venture to capitalize on prominent transit market
Tuesday, 01 March, 2005, 08 : 00 AM [IST]
Johnson Napier, Mumbai
It is being touted as the state's best yet food project that promises to raise business prospects of the famous Orange City, Nagpur. The state's first and only Orange City Food Park located at Butibori, Nagpur, the second capital of Maharashtra, is to open its doors by the start of April 2005.

The brainchild of Maharashtra Agro-Industries Development Corporation (MAIDC) and the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC), the Orange City Food Park has been specially planned and designed to provide cost-effective modern infrastructure and common facilities required for the food processing industries. The project also enjoys the policy support of the Government of Maharashtra as well as the Department of Food Processing Ministries, Government of India.

As per details from MAIDC, the park shall be spread over an area of 100 acres within the five-star industrial estate of Butibori and demarcated into plots of suitable sizes taking into consideration the needs of the potential industries. It has been built at a cost of Rs 20 crore of which Rs 4 crore has been sanctioned from the Centre as part of its funding plans to encourage setting up of food parks across the country. The remaining amount has been funded by the Government of Maharashtra.

Lauding the efforts, Dr S S Limaye, Manager (Projects), MAIDC, said, "People call it the food processing zone, but we call it a food-processing home. The home where one will find every kind of advanced common-facilities that would enable entrepreneurs to run food-processing business with utmost ease and speed."

According to him, one just has to walk into the administrative office of the Food Park situated within the campus and with the aid of the Single Window facility, one can apply for allotments in the park including electricity connection, water connection etc. The other common facilities that would be available include advanced packaging facilities including tetra packaging, cold storage and warehousing, composite food testing laboratory, potable water for food processing, power sub-station, effluent treatment plant (ETP), weigh bridge, amusement parks, cafeteria, banks and dispensaries.

"The Common Facility Centre is centrally located and as per the provisions by MIDC, the plots measuring ½ acre and 1 acre area could be allotted to interested parties. However, the plot size could be altered as per the special requirement of any industry. Already, 23 plots of the total 60 have been booked and are ready for operations", informed Dr Limaye.

Located in the rich and fertile belt of Maharashtra, which is also one of the most prominent transit-markets, the food park will ensure abundant and continuous availability of raw materials. These include oranges, sweetlime, mangoes, papayas, tomatoes, guavas, all kinds of vegetables, pineapples, spices, soya-beans, pulses, oil-seeds, herbs, milk, fresh water fishes etc. It is also backed by the existence of packaging industries and the availability of skilled and unskilled work-force in the area. The chain of star-hotels, theatres, amusement centre and a network of primary, secondary and higher education and medical facilities in Nagpur would be added attractions for making investments here.
