Supreme Court has issued a notice to the Ministries of Health & Family Welfare, Agriculture, Environment, Forest & Climate Change, and the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) in response to the petiton filed on the issie related to excessive use of pesticides and other chemical insecticides on food crops and food items, artificial coloring, coating and waxing of pulses, food grains, and other items, allegedly leading to a high incidence of deaths across the country.
According to reports, the the petitioner submittrd to the Court that data from across the country shows a very high number of deaths due to pesticides.
“There is an abject failure of the FSSAI to curb and control pesticides and ensure food safety. There is a direct scientific and medical correlation between pesticides and cancers, which are on the rise," said the petitioner's submission to the court.
The writ petition also, raised serious questions over the government’s inefficiency in preventing the excessive use of pesticides and other inorganic elements on food crops, saying that the overuse of these substances has led to contamination and toxicity in food leading to serious ailments.
It is pertinent to mention that recently Hong Kong and Singapore has banned two Indian spice brands on the issue of of having carcinogenic substances.
