Gujarat FDCA shows significant achievements towards food safety on World Food Safety Day

The FDCA Gujarat conducted around 23,000 inspections during the last fiscal, which included high-risk and low-risk categories. A total of 4,868 events were handled during which more than 53,000 samples were drawn.
Hemant Koshia, commissioner of Food and Drug Control Administration – Health and Family Welfare Department – Gujarat, said that enforcement samples totalled 17,142 with a 6.592% failure rate, while surveillance samples numbered 39,877 with a 1.806% failure rate, indicating stringent quality control measures. Briefing media on World Food Safety Day, he said, "From the period of January 1, 2023, till March 31, 2024, the FDCA has successfully filed 2,431 adjudication cases, disposing of 1,169 and the total fines imposed amounted to Rs 4,30,92,100. In court, 53 cases were filed and 55 cases disposed of, with fines totalling Rs 25,81,500." The FDCA's mobile units have performed more than 59,000 tests, conducted more than 13,000 awareness programmes, and provided training to individuals on more than 2,000 events, enhancing the reach and impact of food safety education. He said that special drives targeted a variety of products, resulting in 18,686 samples drawn and seizures amounting to Rs 5,53,49,193. Additionally, 13,795 kg of substandard products worth Rs 43,88,610 were destroyed, 51 raids were conducted, leading to the seizure of 4,07,604 kg of unsafe products worth Rs 9,67,49,768 and the destruction of 7,070 kg worth Rs 1,54,000. On licencing front, The FDCA issued 34,133 state licences, 78,745 registration certificates, and 7,675 central licences were issued by the Central licensing Authority in Gujarat, totalling 1,20,553 licences and registrations.
