Jadhav launches rPET guidelines at FSSAI's 2nd National Stakeholder Consultation

In a landmark move to strengthen India's commitment towards sustainable food packaging, Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for AYUSH and Minister of State for Health & Family Welfare Prataprao Ganpatrao Jadhav on Wednesday, officially launched the rPET (Recycled Polyethylene Terephthalate) guidelines during the 2nd National Stakeholder Consultation on Sustainable Packaging for Food Business, organised by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) along with Ministry of Health and Family Welfare at MMRDA New Administrative Building auditorium in Bandra Kurla Complex, Mumbai.
During the event, the official FCM-rPET logo was unveiled, also a video was released on FSSAI’s packaging regulations. An insightful session was led by some of the country’s top experts in sustainable packaging and regulatory frameworks.
In his keynote address, Jadhav emphasised the government’s proactive stance in pushing for eco-friendly and safe food packaging practices. “Sustainability and safety go hand in hand. Our initiatives through FSSAI are not just reforms—they are a revolution in the way India approaches food packaging,” he noted.
FSSAI dignitaries including Dr Satyen Kumar Panda (Advisor QA), Dr Alka Rao (Advisor S&S&R), Pritee Chaudhary (Director, Western Region) and Prof. Vimal Katiyar (Chairperson, Scientific Panel on Packaging), graced the event, elaborating on current trends, policy frameworks, and India’s role in adopting global best practices.
Prof. Katiyar provided a comprehensive overview of the Food Safety and Standards (Packaging) Regulations, 2018, highlighting the need for industry alignment with sustainable goals. BIS Scientist-C Sachin S. Menon also mapped India’s packaging standards with global benchmarks, while Dr. Y. Sontakke, former Director of CPCB, focused on Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) as a driving force behind sustainability.
The panel also featured Dr. Vijay Habbu (AIPMA), who delved into emerging technologies in sustainable packaging, and Bharat Mehta (PET Packaging Association for Clean Environment), who outlined the packaging industry’s contribution towards achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Shailendra Singh, Director General-APR Bharat, stressed on the growing relevance of plastic recycling and its potential to propel India into a circular economy framework.
Dr Rao and Chaudhary spotlighted key FSSAI initiatives in sustainable packaging, reinforcing the authority’s commitment to environmental health, food safety, and regulatory advancement.
The consultation concluded with a shared vision that is to establish India as a global leader in sustainable food packaging anchored by robust guidelines, informed stakeholders, and an unwavering regulatory framework.
