The Union Environment Ministry has said that there was no need for Environment Impact Assessment for slaughter houses.
As per reports, the Union Ministry has filed an affidavit in this regard in response to a petition filed in the National Green Tribunal by an environment activist, Gauri Maulekhi.
Maulekhi has sought directions for mandatory EIA for slaughter houses under EIA Rules, 2006, as slaughter houses pose serious threat of contamination of waterbodies nearby as well as zoonotic disease, if carcasses are not disposed in right manner.
The affidavit, meanwhile, was said to be based on recommendation of an expert committee.
The ministry has told the NGT that guidelines and safeguarding measures are already in place to regulate slaughter houses vis-a-vis environment concerns.
Besides, the ministry added that there are agencies like District Magistrate, Pollution Control Board, FSSAI and APEDA, which already have guidelines regarding such activity.
