The agriculture and allied sector in India recorded a Gross Value Added (GVA) growth of 10.4% in 2024–25 at current prices, according to provisional estimates released by the Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare. The increase reflects sustained expansion across crops, livestock, fisheries and horticulture segments, underscoring the resilience of the farm economy in a challenging global environment.

Total foodgrain production during 2024–25 is estimated at a record 3,577.32 lakh metric tonnes (LMT), a rise of 7.65% compared to the previous year’s output of 3,322.98 LMT, highlighting enhanced productivity and broad-based sectoral performance.

The Government has identified a comprehensive, integrated strategy to bolster farmer income and ensure inclusive growth across agriculture. Key focus areas include enhancing crop production and productivity, reducing cost of production, improving price realisation for farmers, diversification of agriculture, and strengthening post-harvest value addition.

Additional strategic priorities emphasised by the Government include climate change adaptation for sustainable agriculture, expanding irrigation coverage, improving access to credit and market linkages, and supporting insurance schemes that protect crop yields.

The Union Government has also significantly increased budgetary support for the agriculture sector, with allocations rising from ?21,933.50 crore in 2013–14 to ?1,27,290.16 crore in 2025–26, signalling strong fiscal commitment toward agricultural development and farmer welfare.

An expanded portfolio of central sector and centrally sponsored schemes is being implemented to support farmers across the value chain. These include the National Mission on Edible Oils, Mission for Integrated Development of Horticulture (MIDH), Soil Health & Fertility programmes, Digital Agriculture Mission, Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM-KISAN), and schemes targeting insurance, mechanisation and FPO formation.

This growth performance and wide array of policy interventions reflect the Government’s focused efforts to make agriculture more productive, remunerative, sustainable and resilient, benefiting farmers across the country.
