- Govt of India unveils Operation Greens to develop tomato, onion, potato

The Government of India has approved Operation Greens, the Central sector scheme aimed at the integrated development of value chain for three commodities (tomato, onion and potato [TOP]), and the ministry of food processing industries (MoFPI) has, in this regard, also put out operational guidelines.

From November 2018 onwards, the exporters of fruits and vegetables need to obtain approvals for their samples from 30 Indian labs which have been identified by the Saudi Food and Drug Authority (SFDA).
- FSSAI directs fruit traders to avoid stickers to prevent contamination

FSSAI has asked the fruit and vegetable traders to avoid putting stickers on them, as it could lead to contamination of the food product. The country’s apex food regulator said that the safety of the adhesive used for pasting such stickers was unknown, and therefore, it was advised to avoid use of stickers.

Shahi litchi, a variety of the fruit that is grown in five districts of Bihar (namely Muzaffarpur, Vaishali, Samastipur, Champaran and Begusarai) and the adjoining areas, was given the Geographical Indication (GI) tag. It has become the fourth product from the state to receive the status, the others being Jardalu mango, Katarni rice and Magahi paan.

Fearing a sharp spike in the onion prices, the Department of Consumer Affairs (DoCA), Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, Government of India, reviewed the price and availability of onions in India and decided to utilise the price stabilisation fund (PSF) for keeping a check on the prices.
