India and Kenya held the 1st Joint Working Group (JWG) meeting on Agriculture via virtual mode today, marking a significant step in strengthening bilateral cooperation in agricultural development and related sectors. The session was co-chaired by Ajeet Kumar Sahu, Joint Secretary (IC), Department of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare, Government of India, and Stephen Rono, representative of the Ministry of Foreign and Diaspora Affairs, Kenya.
Officials from both countries exchanged views on shared priorities, emerging challenges and opportunities in their respective agricultural landscapes. The discussions underscored the mutual importance of collaboration to address key areas such as agricultural research, market access, mechanisation of farms, capacity building, and training initiatives aimed at enhancing productivity and sustainability.
The virtual meeting was attended by senior representatives from several divisions of India’s Department of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare, including the Crops Division, Mechanisation & Technology (M&T) Division, Natural Resource Management (NRM) Division, Plant Protection (PP) Division, and Extension Division. Delegates from the High Commission of India in Kenya and officials from the Ministry of External Affairs also participated in the discussions, signalling strong institutional support for deepening agricultural ties.
Stakeholders emphasised the role of cooperative strategies in dealing with agricultural challenges such as climate variability, supply chain constraints and the need for inclusive growth that benefits smallholder farmers. Key themes such as enhancing research collaborations, leveraging technology for mechanisation, and building human resource capabilities through targeted training were central to the deliberations.
Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to fostering stronger partnerships that can facilitate knowledge sharing and improve agricultural outcomes for farmers and agribusinesses. The JWG mechanism is expected to serve as an ongoing platform to translate dialogue into actionable programmes, strengthening India-Kenya cooperation in food security, sustainable agriculture and rural development over the coming years.
