The Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers’ Welfare released updated data on the progress of area coverage under Rabi crops in the country as of January 30, 2026, showing a robust increase in sown area over the same period last year. The figures reflect steady momentum in the Rabi season, with notable expansion in pulses and other key crops.

According to the official release, the total area under Rabi cultivation reached 676.84 lakh hectares, marking an increase of 15.88 lakh hectares compared to the corresponding period of the 2024–25 season. The data underscores the resilience and positive trends in agricultural activity amid favourable sowing conditions and support measures.

Among individual crop groups, pulses recorded a significant rise, with the coverage area increasing by 5.03 lakh hectares. Within this category, gram (chana) saw a substantial jump of 4.98 lakh hectares, while other pulses such as lentil and urdbean also registered growth. This uptick in pulses is especially important given the crop’s role in nutrition and cropping diversity.

In addition to pulses, other crop categories reported mixed but positive changes. Wheat area expanded by 6.13 lakh hectares, while rice saw a modest increase of 0.27 lakh hectares. Among coarse cereals and minor millets, maize and barley added area, contributing to the overall healthy progress of the season.

The oilseeds segment also experienced growth, with total coverage up by 3.52 lakh hectares, led by rapeseed and mustard, which together accounted for a significant portion of the area expansion. These gains in oilseed sowing reflect efforts to strengthen crop diversification and enhance farmers’ income streams.

Officials noted that the Rabi sowing progress data indicates farmers’ confidence and effective implementation of support measures such as improved seeds, advisory services, and weather-linked planning. The overall increase in sown area is expected to contribute to stable agricultural output and rural livelihoods as the season progresses further.
The ministry’s release provides a snapshot of the ongoing Rabi season, highlighting both the opportunities and the balanced crop mix contributing to India’s food security and agricultural stability.
