Syngenta expands digital app to empower India’s smallholder farmers with AI-driven tools

Global crop science leader Syngenta Group is scaling up its digital agriculture initiative in India by enhancing its flagship platform, Cropwise Grower, to support smallholder farmers with advanced technology, agronomy insights and market intelligence tailored to local needs.

The expanded digital app aims to bridge the gap between modern agricultural expertise and small-scale farmers who often lack access to real-time advisory services. Cropwise Grower leverages artificial intelligence (AI) and satellite imagery to offer personalised crop recommendations, seed selection guidance and early pest detection, helping farmers make better decisions and increase productivity.

“Smallholders who previously had limited access to expert agronomists can now get tailored answers in their own languages,” said Feroz Sheikh, chief information & digital officer at Syngenta Group. The platform already supports farmers in major cropping regions and has achieved substantial adoption in states such as Punjab and Uttar Pradesh, with plans to further extend coverage to Andhra Pradesh and other key agricultural markets.

Currently, the Cropwise app serves more than 2.38 million farmers, covering around 6 million hectares across India. Beyond agronomic support, Syngenta is developing an AI-powered chatbot to provide instant responses to queries on crops like cotton, paddy and soybean in local languages including Hindi and Marathi, improving accessibility for farmers across linguistic regions.

Looking ahead, Syngenta plans to integrate Cropwise with the government’s proposed virtually integrated system to access agricultural resources (VISTAAR), which could give farmers access to virtual classrooms, training on best practices, credit, insurance, digital marketplaces and other services—all without subscription fees.

By modernising its digital platform and embracing inclusive technologies, Syngenta aims to transform Cropwise into a comprehensive agritech ecosystem that caters to the evolving needs of India’s smallholder farmers and strengthens their resilience in a rapidly changing agricultural landscape.
