Winter chill dents tea arrivals at Coonoor auctions

Unseasonably cold weather conditions have begun to impact tea arrivals at the Coonoor tea auctions, with winter tightening its grip across the Nilgiris. Lower temperatures and reduced sunshine hours have slowed plucking activity, leading to a noticeable dip in volumes entering the auction centres, industry sources said.

Planters in the Nilgiri region reported that the ongoing winter season has affected leaf growth, particularly in higher-altitude estates. Tea bushes require adequate warmth and sunlight for optimal flushing, and the prevailing cold spell has resulted in slower shoot development. As a result, factories are receiving lower quantities of green leaf, directly translating into reduced made-tea production.

Auction officials indicated that arrivals over the past few weeks have been consistently below last year’s levels for the same period. Orthodox teas, which form a significant share of Coonoor auctions, have been particularly affected as small growers and estates alike cut back on plucking cycles to maintain leaf quality during the colder months.

Despite the decline in volumes, prices have remained largely steady, supported by sustained domestic demand and selective buying from exporters. Traders noted that well-made teas with good leaf appearance and liquor characteristics continue to attract interest, while average and lower-quality lots face price pressure. Buyers are also exercising caution amid fluctuating global demand and currency movements.

Small tea growers, who contribute a substantial portion of leaf supply in the Nilgiris, said winter months typically pose challenges due to higher maintenance costs and lower output. However, they remain hopeful that arrivals will gradually improve once temperatures begin to rise and weather conditions stabilise in the coming weeks.

Industry stakeholders expect the lean arrival trend to persist through the peak winter period. Market participants are closely tracking weather patterns, as any extended cold spell could further impact production and auction volumes. For now, the Coonoor auctions are navigating a seasonal slowdown, with quality rather than quantity setting the tone for trade in the winter months.

The Nilgiris region is a key contributor to India’s orthodox tea segment, and movements at Coonoor auctions are often seen as an indicator of broader market sentiment during the winter season.
