The Government of India has released the latest livestock census data for major domestic animal species, providing a detailed enumeration of cattle, buffaloes, goats and sheep across all states and Union Territories. The information was shared in the Rajya Sabha by the Minister of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry & Dairying in response to a parliamentary question.

The livestock census is a comprehensive exercise undertaken periodically to gather accurate, species-wise population figures of domesticated livestock and poultry birds. The 20th edition of the census highlights significant animal population data that forms a crucial basis for policy planning, animal health services, feed and fodder availability measures, and livestock development initiatives across the country.

According to the released figures, India’s livestock population remains one of the largest globally, with cows, buffaloes, goats and sheep forming a substantial part of the rural economy and allied agricultural activities. The detailed annexure provides state and UT-wise animal numbers, revealing varied distribution patterns across regions. For example, states such as Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Rajasthan and Andhra Pradesh recorded high livestock counts, reflecting their extensive involvement in animal husbandry.

The census plays a vital role in assessing resource allocation for schemes such as the National Livestock Mission and Animal Husbandry Infrastructure Development Fund, which aim to expand livestock productivity, improve feed and fodder availability, and strengthen rural livelihoods. The ministry noted that while animal husbandry remains a state subject, the central government continues to supplement state efforts with policy support and targeted funding to boost livestock welfare and infrastructure.

The livestock census data will guide future planning for animal health, production support services and sustainable growth in the livestock sector, reinforcing its significance in national agricultural development strategies.
