Balrampur Chini Mills Ltd has achieved a major milestone in its sustainability journey by securing its first institutional order for eco-friendly bioplastic products from the Lucknow Cantonment Board, according to a regulatory filing recently.

The order, placed by the Lucknow Cantonment Board, comprises a range of fully renewable and compostable Polylactic Acid (PLA) items including garbage bags in two sizes, 300 ml PLA bottles, 3D-printed PLA compostable pens, and PLA folders. All products are made from biodegradable PLA, which breaks down without leaving harmful microplastics, offering a greener alternative to conventional plastics.

The development marks a significant step for Balrampur Chini Mills in diversifying beyond its traditional sugar business and strengthening its presence in India’s emerging bioplastics market. The company’s PLA vertical — branded Balrampur Bioyug — has been central to this effort, catering to increasing institutional and environmental demand for sustainable materials.

Balrampur Chini is also in the process of setting up a large-scale PLA manufacturing facility at Kumbhi in Uttar Pradesh, with a planned annual capacity of 80,000 tonnes. The plant is expected to be operational by October 2026, underscoring the firm’s long-term commitment to fostering a domestic bioplastics ecosystem.

In statements accompanying the order, company executives highlighted that this institutional procurement reflects a growing trust in bio-based materials and signals wider acceptance of sustainable solutions in institutional procurement frameworks. The Lucknow Cantonment Board’s decision aligns with its sustainability initiatives and broader efforts to reduce single-use plastics in governance and operations.

The order places Balrampur Chini at the forefront of a strategic shift toward compostable alternatives, contributing to India’s circular economy goals and environmental sustainability agenda.
