Britannia confirms manufacturing remains unaffected amid gas supply concerns

Consumer goods giant Britannia Industries has clarified that its manufacturing operations remain fully functional and unaffected by the ongoing industrial gas supply disruptions caused by the escalating conflict in West Asia. The statement follows a wave of market speculation and inquiries regarding potential production hits to the maker of Marie Gold and Good Day biscuits.

In an official filing, the company assured stakeholders that it has not experienced any material impact on its manufacturing facilities. To maintain market availability, Britannia confirmed it holds adequate levels of finished goods inventory across its extensive supply chain network.

The industrial gas crunch in India has been triggered by shipping constraints in the Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz, following the U.S.-Israel conflict with Iran. These disruptions have tightened the availability of crude oil, Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), and Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG), prompting the Indian government to prioritize domestic household supplies over industrial use.

Britannia’s resilience is attributed to its "hybrid fuel" strategy. The company revealed that its manufacturing units utilize a diverse range of energy sources, including LPG, Piped Natural Gas (PNG), biomass, and liquid fuels. This flexibility allows the company to perform technical adjustments and switch between fuels as needed to bypass supply bottlenecks.

“The company will continue to closely monitor developments while taking appropriate steps to ensure continuity of operations,” the statement read. Britannia expressed confidence in navigating future challenges and noted the government’s efforts to secure alternative energy cargoes from the U.S., Norway, and Russia.

While other food processors and small-scale industries have begun switching to induction cookers or reducing menus due to the LPG squeeze, Britannia’s multi-fuel capability and robust inventory suggest the snack major is well-positioned to weather the current geopolitical volatility without disrupting the biscuit supply to millions of Indian households.
