The Government of India has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening the country’s food processing ecosystem with a Rs 630 crore allocation for the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Sampada Yojana (PMKSY) in the 2024-25 financial year, the Ministry of Food Processing Industries said in a written reply in the Rajya Sabha.
PMKSY is a central sector umbrella scheme designed to accelerate the creation of modern infrastructure and enhance value addition across the food processing sector. The Rs 630 crore sanctioned allocation will support a wide range of components aimed at improving both production and quality standards in food processing.
Under the scheme, key investment areas include Integrated Cold Chain & Value Addition Infrastructure (ICC&VAI), which ensures better preservation and reduced post-harvest losses; Infrastructure for Agro-processing Clusters (APC) to foster regional food hubs; and Creation/Expansion of Food Processing & Preservation Capacities (CEFPPC) to scale processing units across the country.
The allocation also supports Food Safety and Quality Assurance Infrastructure (FSQAI) to strengthen laboratory facilities and compliance systems, alongside Human Resources and Institutions (Research & Development) to drive innovation and technical expertise in food processing and allied sectors.
Components such as Operation Greens (OG) are included to stabilise prices and support value chains for horticultural crops, ensuring both farmer incomes and consumer affordability. Notably, the scheme’s earlier components — Mega Food Parks and Creation of Backward and Forward Linkages — were discontinued with effect from April 1, 2021, to streamline focus on high-impact infrastructure activities.
Financial assistance under PMKSY is extended as grants-in-aid on a reimbursement basis to a broad range of eligible entities, including public and private companies, cooperatives, farmer producer organisations (FPOs), self-help groups and research bodies. Applications are invited nationwide through an Expression of Interest process and evaluated on merit to ensure impactful utilisation of funds.
The Rs 630 crore allocation underscores the government’s continued emphasis on enhancing food processing capacities, improving supply chains and expanding opportunities for farm-linked value creation across India.
