The Government of India is strengthening the food processing sector by promoting high-tech infrastructure and innovation under major central schemes, Minister of State for Food Processing Industries Ravneet Singh informed the Lok Sabha.
The Pradhan Mantri Kisan SAMPADA Yojana (PMKSY), Production Linked Incentive Scheme for Food Processing Industry (PLISFPI), and the PM Formalization of Micro Food Processing Enterprises (PMFME) scheme are central to expanding modern food processing facilities, from farm gate to retail. These schemes are designed to enhance storage, transportation, value addition and create robust supply chains, leading to better farmer returns, reduced food wastage and increased employment opportunities in rural and urban areas.
To accelerate the adoption of modern technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), Internet of Things (IoT) and advanced processing equipment, the ministry is extending grant-in-aid support to educational and research institutions, including private sector R&D units recognised by the Council of Scientific & Industrial Research (CSIR) under the R&D component of PMKSY. Financial assistance varies from 50 per cent to up to 100 per cent of equipment costs, depending on the area and type of institution, helping innovators develop next-generation food processing technologies.
Institutions such as the National Institute of Food Technology Entrepreneurship and Management (NIFTEM) in Kundli and Thanjavur are actively engaged in research aimed at product and process development.
Beyond infrastructure incentives, subsidies are also available to eligible startups and MSMEs, helping them scale up operations and bring cutting-edge technologies into mainstream food processing. These targeted interventions reflect the government’s commitment to transforming India’s food processing landscape through innovation, capacity building and long-term value creation for stakeholders across the agricultural and industrial spectrum.
