Ajinomoto Co., Inc., announced that, together with Ajinomoto Vietnam Co., Ltd., a regenerative agriculture demonstration project for cassava cultivation in the Socialist Republic of Vietnam was selected on February 8, 2026, for the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry’s FY2024 Supplementary Budget Global South Future-Oriented Co-Creation Project Subsidy (Small-Scale Demonstration / Feasibility Study Projects).
The selected project aims to demonstrate regenerative agriculture that improves productivity in cassava cultivation and increases farmers’ income in the Socialist Republic of Vietnam while reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. (named SCP- sustainable casava project).
Cassava is one of the primary raw materials used in the production of umami seasonings by the Ajinomoto Group and is an important agricultural crop that must be sourced in a stable and sustainable manner. However, cassava cultivation in Vietnam relies largely on traditional farming methods and faces several challenges, including low yields, damage caused by diseases such as CMD (Cassava Mosaic Disease) or pests, dependence on chemical fertilisers, and limited growth in farmers’ income. In addition, the use of chemical fertilisers is one of the factors causing to high GHG emissions, and there is a growing need to promote GX (Green Transformation) in the agricultural sector.
In this demonstration project, Ajinomoto Co. and Ajinomoto Vietnam Co., Ltd. will take the lead, working in collaboration with an agricultural research centre under Vietnam’s Ministry of Agriculture and Environment, to provide farmers with an integrated cassava cultivation package that combines the following elements: Introduction of new cassava varieties with resistance to diseases and pests developed by Vietnamese agricultural research centre. Provision of fertiliser utilising amino acid co-products developed by the Ajinomoto Group (as an alternative to chemical fertilisers). Technical guidance on improved farming practices, including soil preparation and irrigation. A platform for the exchange of technical information between farmers and experts using a smartphone application by providing these to farmers, the project will demonstrate improvements in cassava yield per unit area while reducing GHG emissions per unit of yield.
The knowledge obtained through this project will be systematically compiled into a cultivation handbook, with the aim of establishing it as the de facto standard for cassava cultivation in Vietnam in the future. Furthermore, by expanding this model to other countries, the project will contribute to the spread of sustainable agriculture in the Global South and to the overseas deployment of Japan’s advanced agricultural technologies. Through the promotion of sustainable agriculture that takes environmental and social issues into consideration, Ajinomoto Co. aims to realise its purpose of contributing to the well-being of all human beings, the society and the planet with ‘AminoScience’.
