This year's World Food Safety Day theme is "From burden to solutions - safe food everywhere". Both FAO and the Codex Alimentarius provide solutions to the burden of foodborne illness.
In celebration of World Food Safety Day, FAO has published a new feature on "The inspector at the border", which offers a glimpse into the work of food inspectors responsible for helping ensure that imported food meets national requirements and food safety standards.
The story underscores the importance of effective food control systems in protecting consumers and facilitating safe trade. It also highlights the role of the FAO/WHO Food Control System Assessment Tool, which supports countries in evaluating the performance of their food control systems, identifying areas for improvement and strengthening their capacity to manage food safety risks.
Used by countries around the world, the assessment tool helps authorities take a systematic approach to enhancing food control systems and supporting the implementation of internationally recognised food safety standards.
