Monday, 23 September, 2019, 08 : 00 AM [IST]

Peru‘s participation in the latest edition of Asia Fruit Logistica, as a partner country, resulted in projected business deals of $180 million for the export of products from the Peruvian fruit and vegetable sector to different Asian markets. The Andean nation is the world’s biggest exporter of quinoa and asparagus; second in cranberries, avocados and mandarins; and third in table grapes.

The country is keen on the Asian market with the anticipated opening in 2019 of the markets of Taiwan, Malaysia and the Philippines to avocados; Japan and the Philippines to grapes; China and Indonesia to grenadines; India and Malaysia to cranberries; and Vietnam and India to citrus fruits. Mario Ocharán, export director, Promperu (the company that arranged the event), in an email interaction with Manjushree Naik delves deeper into how the show has helped the country achieve its objectives and its future plans for India and other countries. Excerpts:

How has AFL helped in improving Peru's top position in the fresh produce business?
Asia is one of the biggest importer market in the world for fresh fruits and vegetables and is the continent with more population around the world. Being present in AFL helped Peru to show its exportable offer to one of the main markets in the world for fresh food. It also gave us the opportunity to show the products in which we are leaders around the world.

The country leads international export rankings in categories such as asparagus, quinoa, avocadoes, blueberries and mandarins. Explain.
Peru produces many fruits and vegetables that can be found in other parts of the world, but due to its geographical location Peruvian products taste different and in most of the cases they grow 100% natural and organic. Another important issue is that most of the Peruvian products have different properties and benefits for people´s health that makes them demanded around the world. Those are the key facts that allow Peru to be a leader as a supplier in products such as asparagus, quinoa, avocados, blueberries, mandarins and others.

Peru is known for foods rich in nutrients and antioxidants. How has the country overcome the regulatory, preservation and other challenges in order to maintain this leading position?

Our regional offices make hard work with the producers and exporters teaching them the importance of produce our products according to the regulations that the different markets around the world have. That has allowed us to maintain our leading position around the world.
