The Kerala Food Safety Department recently officially banned 42 coconut oil brands for violating the rules and regulations for quality standards set by FSSAI.
State food safety commissioner A R Ajayakumar said, “We are collecting more samples and doing routine inspections on a regular basis. The analysts collect and examine each product thoroughly.”
“When products are found to be in violation of the quality standards set by FSSAI, they get taken off the market,” he added.
The coconut oil brands boast of being a hundred per cent pure coconut oil, but some were found to have palm oil and others were found to have sunflower oil, while sporting an image of a freshly cracked coconut on the cover. Not only is it false advertising, but also deceptive, as the product is not what it claims to be.
Ajayakumar has issued an order banning the manufacture and sale of these products, and if retailers are found to have these products on sale, strict action will be taken.
“We have already issued a notice to the brands about the ban of manufacture and sale of their products, and strict measures are being undertaken to see that these products are neither manufactured nor sold in the market,” he added.
