Govt asks Q-comm to drop 10-min delivery option after holding discussions

Ashwani Maindola, New Delhi
The Union Government has asked the quick commerce businesses in the country to drop the 10-minute delivery option on their platform after a discussion held with the delivery aggregators including Blinkit, Zomato, Swiggy and Zepto.

The Union Ministry of Labour held a detailed discussion with the officials of these online platforms amid concerns related to quick delivery timings adopted by them, which has put questions on gig workers’ working conditions.

After the discussions, the platforms have accepted the advisory by the Labour Ministry and initiated the operations with respect to removal of the option of 10-minute delivery.

Reacting to the news, the All India Consumer Products Distributors Federation (AICPDF) welcomed the Government of India’s intervention and called it a crucial first step in correcting a business model that prioritised speed and superficial convenience at the cost of consumer transparency, worker safety, and fair market practices.

CAIT has also raised concerns on the model of quick commerce platforms.

Praveen Khandelwal, MP and secretary general, CAIT, has said, “CAIT reiterated that the ban on 10-minute delivery is a clear acknowledgment of the concerns raised by the organisation over the years and will pave the way for necessary and positive reforms in the quick commerce sector.”

The matter related to the gig workers’ working conditions remained a trending topic on social media platforms and was raised by various prominent personalities, forcing the Union Government to intervene.
