The Commissionerate of Food Safety, Kerala, has decided to run analytical laboratory in Kannur district in full capacity. The lab has been operating on a trial basis since September 23. It will serve three districts of Kannur, Kasargod and Wayanad as this will reduce the time and expense on food testing done at Kozhikode until now.
The lab will test pulses, cereals, spices and other food products for adulteration.
Kerala Health Minister K K Shailaja inaugurated the laboratory recently and said that with the commissioning of the lab, the people in Kasargod, Kannur and Wayanad could avail its services without having to go all the way to Kozhikode for testing.
While talking to FnB News, Pradeep Kumar V K, Assistant Commissioner, Food Safety, Kannur, said, “The lab has started on a temporary basis in a rented building as there is a delay in completing the construction of the lab's building. We have been testing samples of water as of now. We have also developed facilities in the lab to test pulses, cereals and spices. In this lab, we are analysing the items and if we found any adulterated food items, we can only take action against the concerned person."
He also shared insights about future plans on ensuring food safety. He said that his office is also working on plans to identify the source of adulteration. "We want to make sure the items are freshly supplied and remain unadulterated throughout the supply chain,” he said and added that testing of food items will continue until Christmas. He added, “We will be testing all the food items during the festive season. Our focus is on the food colour and food products will also be tested for the same, as adulteration is possible.”
