National Pizza Day falls on February 9, and SOTC Travel will commemorate the day with a slice-by-slice journey to some of the most popular pizza destinations across the globe.
Italy The home of wood five oven pizzas, every region of the European nation has its own spin on the dish, with toppings ranging from the rustic to the modern. Patrons can explore the flavours of Tuscany, Naples, Milan, Florence, Sicily and more.
New York The pizza from the US City is large and has a thin crust. The sauce is the king, as is evident from the fact that numerous eateries in the Big Apple have their own special ingredients that make their pie stand out.
Chicago The Windy City is synonymous with deep-dish pizza, and travellers must make it a point to visit various restaurants, as they offer diversity in the types of pizza served.
South Korea The flavours on offer in this Asian nation include the gochujang (red pepper paste)- based and wasabi-based sauces.
The toppings range from chicken, mushroom and pepperoni to bulgogi (sliced marinated beef), calamari and kimchi, and even dessert options like strawberry, kiwi and marshmallows.
But the difference lies in the diverse crusts on offer. While most pizzerias all over the world choose to make stuffed pizza crust with the usual cheese and meat, South Korea takes it a step ahead to include stuffings like sweet potato paste, flavoured cream cheese, shrimp nuggets and mocha.
Greece While Greek pizzas do not get too different with the toppings, it is the way they make pizza crust that makes them stand apart from the others. They use a liberal helping of olive oil that makes the pizza fluffier and crispier. The toppings are generally the usual olives, feta and meat.
