India exported an estimated 7.75 lakh tonnes (775,000 tonnes) of sugar in the 2024-25 marketing year (October to September), the All India Sugar Trade Association (AISTA) announced on Sunday.
Of the total shipments, white sugar accounted for 6.13 lakh tonnes, refined sugar 1.04 lakh tonnes, and raw sugar 33,338 tonnes. Additionally, around 21,000 tonnes of raw sugar delivered to the Special Economic Zone (SEZ) were treated as deemed exports.
The top export destinations included Djibouti (1.46 lakh tonnes), Somalia (1.35 lakh tonnes), Sri Lanka (1.34 lakh tonnes) and Afghanistan (75,533 tonnes).
The government had permitted sugar exports from January 20, 2025, capping the allowed volume at 10 lakh tonnes for the season. While exports fell short of the ceiling, AISTA emphasised that external pressure on global sugar prices and fierce competition may have constrained further shipments.
In a statement, AISTA has urged the Central Government to announce the 2025-26 export quota by November 2025. The trade body also recommended that the allocation and exchange mechanism among mills be maintained as in the current season.
Industry observers say the underutilisation of the quota partly stems from depressed global sugar prices, intensified Brazilian exports, and narrowing margins for Indian mills.
Looking ahead, AISTA remains optimistic that with a favourable monsoon and improved cane yields, India will have sufficient surplus sugar for export in the upcoming season — provided policy signals come early.
