Union minister for Agriculture, Farmers’ Welfare, and Rural Development Shivraj Singh Chouhan addressed a massive gathering of nearly 20,000 farmers at the Global Vikas Trust (GVT) Krishikul in Sirsala, Beed district, Maharashtra, reaffirming the Centre’s commitment to safeguard farmers’ welfare and boost agricultural resilience.
Addressing the farmers,Chouhan announced that every rupee of crop insurance owed under the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana will be paid in full. “If required, we will personally consult farmers to ensure that each beneficiary receives their rightful claim,” he said, adding that he had recently reviewed the claim settlement process with insurance companies to eliminate discrepancies.
Acknowledging the widespread crop damage due to excessive rainfall, the Minister assured immediate compensation through the State Government and additional aid via the National Disaster Response Fund (NDRF). “If Maharashtra seeks a special relief package after assessing the losses, the Centre will extend full support,” he declared.
Highlighting the growing challenges of climate change, Chouhan emphasised the need for developing climate-resilient seed varieties and promoting natural and cow-based farming to reduce chemical dependence and restore soil health. “To secure the future of coming generations, we must shift toward organic and sustainable agriculture,” he noted.
The Minister also revealed that the government is considering direct transfer of fertiliser subsidies to farmers’ accounts to enhance transparency and prevent misuse. To curb the menace of fake fertilisers, seeds, and pesticides, he announced that a new bill targeting counterfeit agri-input manufacturers will be introduced in the upcoming Budget Session.
Chouhan urged farmers to diversify their crops and adopt integrated farming systems, combining agriculture with allied sectors like beekeeping, animal husbandry, and fisheries to supplement income. He further informed that 65% of MGNREGA funds in drought-prone regions would be allocated for water conservation initiatives to strengthen irrigation facilities.
Underlining the Centre’s commitment to rural welfare, the Minister said Maharashtra has received 30 lakh houses under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana, assuring that remaining eligible families will soon benefit.
