The State-wise estimation of Milk, Meat, Egg and Wool production is done by Department of Animal Husbandry & Dairying annually through Integrated Sample Survey conducted through State Animal Husbandry Department. Total milk production in the country during 2022-23, was 230.58 million tonnes and per capita availability was 459 grams per day per person in the same period. As regards consumption of milk, National Sample Survey Office (NSSO) conducts Household Consumption Expenditure Survey at regular intervals wherein information on the consumption of food and non-food items by the household is collected including consumption of milk & milk products. As therein per capita consumption of milk was 164 grams per day per person in rural area and 190 grams per day per person in urban area during 2022-23.
The per capita availability of milk in India was higher than the consumption during 2022-23. Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FASSI)is a statutory body under Department of Health & Family Welfare that ensures the safety and quality of food in India. FSSAI is fully committed to ensure the availability of safe food products to the consumers across the country. Towards this, FSSAI through State/UTs and its Regional Offices conducts regular surveillance, monitoring, inspection and random sampling of various food products including dairy products, spices and fortified rice, to check compliance with the quality and safety parameters and other requirements as laid down under Food Safety and Standards (FSS) Act 2006, and regulations made there under. In cases of non-compliance to the statutory requirements as above, penal action is initiated against the defaulting Food Business Operators (FBOs) as per the provisions laid down under the FSS Act.
Further, FSSAI has conducted pan-India surveillances for milk and milk products in 2011, 2016, 2018, 2020, 2022 and 2023. The report of Milk surveillance done by FSSAI in 2018, 2020 & 2022 is available in public domain at www.fssai.gov.in/cms/national-surveys.php.FSSAI has also asked the State/UTs to deploy the Food Safety on Wheels for screening/rapid testing of Milk and Milk products.
The details of the measures taken by the Department of Animal Husbandry & Dairying to address milk adulteration and quality standards in the country is placed at Annexure I.
Under National Programme for Dairy Development (NPDD) scheme, 10 projects have been approved in Punjab including Amritsar district with the total project cost of Rs.27,907.38 lakh including central share of Rs.18,441.39 lakh and out of this an amount of Rs.15,509.46 lakh has been released till date. Milk Union Amritsar has received Central share of Rs.1873.13 lakh under NPDD projects out of which Rs.1504.22 lakh has been utilised.
